When President Kennedy did a speech in Berlin, his ending line is "Ich bin ein Berliner." To German speakers, what that really means is "I am a jelly donut"
Here is a quick post. Something I whipped up this AM for breakfast. I was watching "Nigella Express"" last week, and she made these on her show. We all know who Nigella is..RIGHT?
I love Jelly donuts. Jelly sticks, really. The ones they make at the Shop-Rite in my home town. They are cigar shaped and ultra crispy, filled with raspberry jelly. The next time I am home, I must insist, DEMAND they give me their recipe :)
......as for now, this is a great quick substitute . Really tastes like the real thing. Fast and simple vs. making a whole batch of the real ones.
Ingredients
1 loaf of plain white bread
I use an uncut one from the grocery, so I can control the thickness of slice.

2 Tablespoons unsalted butter
2 whole eggs
2- 3 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 pinch of cinnamon
1 cup of white sugar
Slice bread in thick slices, then in half , like a triangle. Whisk eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon in a flat pie plate until beaten . Place 1 cup sugar in a separate pie plate. Melt butter in a pan on stove.
Dip bread into egg/milk mixture and coat all sides. ( Like french toast) .

Place in heated pan and brown lightly on all sides. I place a lid on the pan to steam them thru @ 3 mins.
Remove from pan, and hand press warm bread into sugar, all sides.
Plate. Pour heated red raspberry jam over bread, or which ever flavor jam you like.
Orgasmic!
I make this for my kids often, we all love it! I grew up having this for breakfast many many times! It's also a great way to use a bit older bread. I never thought of adding vanilla, will try!
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting my blog, and for a lovely comment! Yours is delicious too!
That looks really good. But I'm trying to remember IF, when I'm eating just regular French toast, I think it tastes doughnutty. Is it the vanilla (and of course the jam) that does that?
ReplyDelete@ Melita.. Thanks for stopping buy!
ReplyDelete@ Sue..I think it is a combo of vanilla, jam, and the pressed suger give it that jelly donut "feel"" . I just ate them again today! Damn Nigella!
A favourite breakfast treat in my home. Yum
ReplyDeleteI was skeptical at the idea of "mock jelly donuts", but the recipe sounds (a) easy, and (b) tasty. I think I'll let you make it for me the next time you visit. :-)
ReplyDelete@ mev, of course!
ReplyDeleteI love jelly donuts, all crusted in sugar. Such a great way to make them, avoiding the use of a deep fryer!
ReplyDeleteReally liked reading this post by the way, the opening is genius (my husband is a Berliner!).
Thanks Connie! I am glad you could get a little chuckle from my quote! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing idea! I do love Nigella and her wicked ways of creating, eating and presenting food. She really is a domestic goddess! Thanks for sharing- they look great!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sanjana ! :) I saw your lemons!
ReplyDeleteoh, yum! what a great idea - i love any excuse for having dessert as breakfast ;-)
ReplyDeleteHi lumpy !
ReplyDeleteWe have quite the same recipe here, i used to eat lot of that when i was kid.
We call that "pain perdu" (litteraly: "lost bread"..)
But we use stale bread instead (baguette) and icing sugar on it (sucre glace ?), the rest of the recipe is the same, but the result very different, your bread is crispy around and smooth in the inside.
Merci Beaucoup Bubba! You should try my American version:0 SMOOOOCHES!
